Outdoor Archery Gear: Staying Warm, Dry, and Focused in the PNW

Outdoor archery in the Pacific Northwest comes with a unique challenge—the weather. From unexpected rain showers to chilly mornings and muddy fields, being prepared with the right gear can make a huge difference in your comfort and performance. Whether you’re training or competing, dressing appropriately for the conditions will help you stay focused on your shot instead of the elements.

Layering for Comfort and Performance

The key to staying warm and dry is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer that keeps sweat off your skin and helps regulate body temperature. Brands like Patagonia, Smartwool, and REI Co-op offer great options for synthetic or merino wool base layers. Over this, add an insulating mid-layer, such as a fleece or lightweight down jacket, to trap heat. Finally, top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer shell, like a GORE-TEX rain jacket, to protect against rain and wind.

Remember to keep these layers tight, but also flexible as you do not want to limit movements. Be comfortable through the draw cycle, and keep from baggy layers from interfering with your string. Recurve archers have to pay more attention to this compared to compound archers.

Footwear for Wet and Muddy Conditions

Outdoor ranges often mean muddy fields, uneven terrain, and standing water, especially in the early spring and fall seasons. A good pair of waterproof hiking boots or muck boots can keep your feet dry and provide traction on slick surfaces. If you prefer lighter footwear, trail running shoes with good grip are a solid option for drier conditions.

An additional option would be to get a pair of gators that go up to your knees to protect your pants from the mud, or just opt for a rain pant shell.

Small Essentials That Make a Big Difference

Beyond clothing, a few key accessories can help keep you comfortable during outdoor archery sessions. Hand warmers are great for cold mornings, and a lightweight beanie or headband can keep the chill off without interfering with your anchor point. Waterproof gloves with a good grip can help you handle your gear in wet conditions. A small towel or microfiber cloth is useful for drying off arrows, your bow grip, or even your release aid.

Protecting Your Gear

Rain and damp conditions don’t just affect you—they can take a toll on your equipment as well. Investing in a waterproof bow case or using dry bags for small accessories can keep everything in top condition. If you’re using a paper target face, having a laminated or plastic-backed version can prevent it from disintegrating in the rain.

Having a canopy to set your gear under while you are retrieving your arrows is a great way to protect your gear, and a place for you to get out of the rain as needed.

Final Thoughts

Shooting outdoors in the PNW can be unpredictable, but with the right gear, you can stay warm, dry, and focused on your shot. Investing in quality layers, waterproof footwear, and essential accessories will ensure that rain or shine, you’re ready to train and compete. Before heading out, always check the forecast and plan accordingly—because in the Northwest, the weather can change in an instant.

It’ll seem like you are getting ready for a hike with all this gear! The most important is to stay warm and as dry as possible. And while your at it, you might as well go for a hike using your new gear!
